The basics

What is Botox?

Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin type A, a prescription medicine that has been FDA-approved for cosmetic use since 2002. A few tiny injections relax the specific muscles that crease your skin when you frown, squint or raise your brows, so the lines above them soften and smooth out.

It works best on dynamic lines, the ones that appear when you make an expression. Started early, it can also help keep those lines from setting in deeper. Done well, you still look like you, just more rested.

Lines you can see when your face is completely relaxed, or areas that have lost volume, may respond better to dermal filler or a combination of both. Jamie will walk you through your options at your consultation.

Consultation

Jamie asks about your goals and health history, watches how your face moves and recommends the areas and dose that fit the look you want.

Treatment

A few quick injections with a very fine needle. Most people feel a small pinch, and the injections themselves take just minutes.

Results

You’ll start to see a difference in 3 to 5 days, with full results at about 2 weeks. That’s the right time to decide on any touch-up.

Maintenance

Results last about 3 to 4 months. Many clients rebook on that schedule to keep lines soft all year.

After your treatment

Don’t rub or massage the treated area, and skip facials for 24 hours.
Stay upright for at least 1 hour.
Hold off on workouts for at least 3 hours, and on saunas, hot tubs and tanning for at least 4 hours.
Go back to work and your normal routine right away.

Good to know before you book

Botox isn’t recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
Tell us about any allergies, including to a previous botulinum toxin, and any nerve or muscle condition.
Let us know if you have a skin infection where you’d be treated, or a bleeding disorder.
Have an event coming up? Book at least 2 weeks ahead so your results are fully settled.

Does Botox hurt?

Most people describe a quick pinch. The needle is very fine, the injections take only a few minutes, and ice or numbing can make it even more comfortable.

Will I look frozen?

Not when the dose is right for you. Jamie tailors the number of units and where they go, so you can still move your face naturally, just with softer lines.

How many units will I need?

It depends on the area, the strength of your muscles and the look you want. Jamie will recommend a dose at your consultation. Botox is priced per unit, so you only pay for what you need.

What are the possible side effects?

The most common are temporary redness, small bumps at the injection points, mild bruising and headache. Less often, a brow or eyelid can droop for a few weeks. Get medical help right away if you have trouble swallowing, speaking or breathing after treatment.

Should I choose Botox or Dysport?

Both relax the muscles behind expression lines and last about as long. Dysport may start working a day or two sooner and spreads a little more. Jamie will help you decide at your consultation. Compare Dysport and Botox.
